Session 1-Pre-Candidacy in Cave Creek

Hello to all of you. At long last here is the Blog. After investigating several scenarios, this is the one we will begin with.

I enjoyed our first session so much, talking about my favorite subject: How teachers impact students and their learning. I am hoping that this week you have had just a little bit of time to reflect on the 5 Core Propositions, and how they are imbedded in what you do EVERY day for students and colleagues.

Have you had any insights this week as you looked for evidence? As we discussed, the Propositions are the real content of National Board. They encompass all of the standards and all of the things we do as teachers. As we investigate the process together, they will be the glue that holds all of our learning together.

So for the blog this week, just share any insights you had this first week as we had our overview.

I look forward to Session 2.

After the first class, I walked away with "why" do I do the strategies that I do. I know that I do them-lots of them, but why. I focused on the rapport with students the past few days (writing the agenda on the board along with announcements, writing comments on student work, greeting students before class, sharing stories with the class, bringing humor into the classroom, talking to students about their work, problem or concern, etc). I noticed my students are eager to come into my class to read the agenda and announcements. When papers are passed out, they read the comments and smile. All of this gives a message that I care. I feel it also contributes to a comfortable classroom environment where my students feel safe to share a problem, concern or to ask a question in class.

Wow! You have done lots of thinking! I love how you have specified some of your interactions with your students.

Now take it one step further and think about how all of this (the culture and climate in your classroom that you have created through all of those strategies you discuss) impacts their learning!

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow! Great job!

Throughout this process, I have thinking about the core propositions a lot (mostly proposition 2). I know there are several things that I do every day to help my students achieve success, but I don't really stop and take the time to think about the reasons behind these daily activities. I've also been trying to improve my teaching techniques. As we know, we're all life long learners and I can always improve my instruction to become a better teacher. I feel like the core propositions help me focus on the most important aspects of being an effective educator.
